Over 20 years ago I graduated from Liverpool University. The day after my graduation I started my career working for a strategy consultant firm in London. During my first week I thought I was this highly qualified person ready to show the world what I could do.  I do not consider myself an overly confident person but a combination of youth and insecurity created this bubble of false self assuredness. On my second day the CEO suggested that I should read a book called What they don´t teach you at Harvard. Although I was curious to read it I didn´t actually read it until a few years later.

The essence of the book, and the lesson my CEO was trying to teach me, is that education is an ongoing process, and that formal education serves only as a foundation. The next steps are to use your instincts, curiosity and senses to gain experience in order to get where you want to go.

This same lesson can be applied to language learning where many people attend classes at language schools and adopt an intellectual approach to learning English. Much of my language learning advice is unconventional, not just to be different, but because I believe that dependence on traditional ideas and methods is the biggest reason why Spanish people do not progress.

I do not have a prejudice against intelligence, language schools or MBAs. They can be useful foundations but they are not substitutes for intuition, curiosity or experience. An over reliance on traditional methods can inhibit learning through self-satisfaction and complacency.
